Brief Introduction:
Propylene isothiocyanate (AITC) is a natural organosulfur compound found in cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, mustard, horseradish and cauliflower, and is known for its spicy taste. AITC is usually stored in plants in the form of a stable precursor, sinigrin, and is converted into an active form through an enzymatic reaction released when tissues are damaged. AITC has a variety of pharmacological properties, including anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory effects. Studies have shown that AITC can significantly interfere with the oxidative stress, inflammatory response, cell proliferation, cycle arrest, apoptosis, angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis of cancer cells, showing good anticancer potential. However, due to its low water solubility, instability and low bioavailability, its clinical application faces challenges. In addition, AITC also exhibits a toxic effect on pine wood nematodes (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), which can cause the nematodes to become distorted in morphology, move slowly, and even die, and affect the total sugar and protein content in the nematodes and the activity of their antioxidant enzymes. This provides a theoretical basis for the development of plant-based nematicides based on AITC.
