  • Brief Introduction:

Ethyl Acrylate is a colorless, acrid-smelling liquid with a flash point of 60 °F and an auto-ignition temperature of 721 °F (383 °C). It is primarily used in the production of paints and plastics, and it is known to be less dense than water, with vapors heavier than air. However, it poses significant health hazards, including cancer risk, as indicated by independent scientific committees such as the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA). It is also prone to polymerization when heated or contaminated, which can lead to violent ruptures if confined in containers. In industrial applications, ethyl acrylate has been used in the synthesis of a composite material with chemically modified guar gum, known as GG-EEA, which serves as a corrosion inhibitor. This composite showed an impressive corrosion inhibition efficiency of 92.3% for P110 steel in a 15% hydrochloric acid solution. The composite works by adsorbing onto the metal surface, reducing hydrogen evolution and corrosion, and demonstrating a higher efficiency than earlier reported inhibitors even at low concentrations. Advanced characterization techniques like scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the composite's performance.

Acrylic Esters

Ethyl acrylate is an ester of acrylic acid, making it part of the acrylic ester category, which also includes other acrylates like butyl acrylate and methyl acrylate.

Monomers

It is widely used as a monomer in the production of polymers and copolymers, particularly for applications in paints, coatings, adhesives, and textiles.

Esters

As an ester compound, it belongs to the broader class of esters, characterized by the functional group (-COO-).

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

Due to its volatility and organic nature, ethyl acrylate is classified as a volatile organic compound, which can contribute to air pollution and requires careful handling.
