  • Brief Introduction:

Diacetone alcohol (DAA), also known as 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone, is a clear, colorless liquid with a pleasant odor and has versatile applications in industries such as pharmaceuticals, printing inks, and polymers. It is formed by the hydroxylation of 4-methylpentan-2-one at the 4-position and has been identified as a plant metabolite in various organisms including Achnatherum robustum, Camellia sinensis, and Angelica gigas. DAA can be efficiently produced from bio-derived glycerol through oxidative dehydrogenation using perovskite LaM1−xCuxO3 (M = Cr, Fe, Co) catalysts, with LaCr0.5Cu0.5O3 showing the highest selectivity (89%) and yield (87%). This catalytic process benefits from the incorporation of copper within the perovskite structure, enhancing its activity. Additionally, innovative methods have been proposed for synthesizing jet fuel range C10 and C12 cycloalkanes utilizing DAA as the primary feedstock, offering an efficient route to desired products with reduced activation energy. Monitoring and optimizing the production process of DAA involves hierarchical process monitoring techniques based on principal component analysis (PCA) and slow feature analysis (SFA), which help predict off-spec events and ensure high-quality output. Furthermore, a CeSnBeta zeolite catalyst featuring dual Lewis acidic sites has shown promise in converting acetone to isobutene, showcasing enhanced stability even without co-fed water, thus highlighting the importance of specific catalytic environments for effective DAA production and related reactions.

Solvents

Diacetone alcohol is primarily used as a solvent in various applications such as coatings, paints, adhesives, and cleaning products.

Alcohols

It is classified as an alcohol, specifically a secondary alcohol, because of the hydroxyl (-OH) group attached to a carbon atom that is also bonded to two other carbon atoms.

Ketones

The chemical structure of diacetone alcohol contains a ketone group (a carbonyl group, C=O) as well, so it can be categorized as both an alcohol and a ketone.

Chemical Intermediates

It can be used in the production of other chemicals and as an intermediate in chemical synthesis.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

Diacetone alcohol is considered a volatile organic compound due to its volatility and contribution to air pollution when used in large quantities in open environments.
