  • Brief Introduction:

Propylene carbonate (PC) is an important organic molecule compound that is widely used in many fields. It can be synthesized from carbon dioxide and propylene oxide under the action of different catalysts, including zinc glutarate, cobalt-zinc double metal cyanide complex, etc., showing high catalytic activity and selectivity (such as the work of Rokicki et al. in 1979 and subsequent studies). PC is used as a solvent-free and metal-free polar solvent due to its high dielectric constant. It has important applications in lithium-ion battery electrolytes and is used as an intermediate for the production of polycarbonate and other useful chemicals (reference Polymer 2022, 14, 2159). In addition, PC also exhibits good biodegradability and mechanical properties. Its toughness, optical properties and thermal stability can be improved by blending with other materials such as polylactic acid (PLA) (International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, 2024). Studies have also shown that PC can form composite materials with a variety of substances to enhance its thermal stability and mechanical strength, such as by adding tannic acid to improve its thermodynamic properties (Polym. Adv. Technol., 2022).

Solvents

It is commonly used as a solvent in various applications, including in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and electronics industries.

Polar Aprotic Solvents

Propylene carbonate is considered a polar aprotic solvent due to its ability to dissolve a wide range of polar and nonpolar compounds while not hydrogen-bonding strongly with solutes.

Electrolyte Solvents

Propylene carbonate is often used in electrolyte formulations, particularly in lithium-ion batteries, as it is a good solvent for lithium salts.

Plasticizers

It can also be used as a plasticizer in certain polymers and resins.

Chemical Intermediate

Propylene carbonate serves as a precursor in the synthesis of other chemicals, including certain surfactants, polyurethanes, and other derivatives.

Cosmetic and Personal Care Ingredients

In some formulations, PC is used in cosmetics as a solvent or for its moisture-retaining properties.
